But it is a romantic story, for you suddenly find yourself in the fabled lands of the Arabian Nights.
"The Golden Road to Samarkand" winds through it. You are in "cool silent gardens of Ispahan" and the flower-strewn fields of Kirman, in the Alhambra, the courtyards of China, and Queen Elizabeth's great audience hall.
No one knows when or where the first pile fabric was knotted. Probably its inspiration was an animal's skin, and our enterprising ancestor was trying to concoct with his own fingers something as warm, as pliable and as strong.
