About Ardebil carpet



It is the floral type with an elab­orate central medallion. Thirty-four feet long by seventeen feet and six inches wide, it has a silk warp and a wool pile.

The illustration which shows only one end of the rug will give you some idea of its intricate pattern, but the jewellike colors are impossible to describe—the deep midnight blue ground, the sunny yellow of the medallion, the rose reds and sparkling whites.

Thirty-two million knots are tied to its warps, and the master weaver, with rightful pride, has woven into it this inscription:

I have no refuge in the world other than thy threshold, My head has no protection other than this porchway, The work of the slave of this Holy Place.
